Baghdad car bombs leave 60 dead
More than 60 people have been killed and 131 injured in three car bombs in Shia districts of the Iraqi capital Baghdad, police sources have said.
Twin blasts hit a market in the New Baghdad area, killing 60 people. Two more people died in another blast in Sadr City.
Explosion in Russian McDonald’s
An explosion at a McDonald’s restaurant in the Russian city of St Petersburg has slightly injured six people with concussion and cuts from flying glass.
The cause of the blast was unclear, but police said their initial information suggested that it was caused by “an explosive device”.
US troops killed in chopper crash
Eight US troops have been killed and 14 wounded in a helicopter crash in south-eastern Afghanistan, US-led coalition forces say.
The Chinook came down after the pilot reported engine trouble.
The crash happened in Zabul province, bordering Pakistan. A coalition statement said the Taleban had been building up forces in the area.
Zimbabwe opposition rally stopped
Police in Zimbabwe have used tear-gas and water cannon to prevent an opposition rally from going ahead in the capital, Harare.
The Movement for Democratic Change (MDC) leader Morgan Tsvangirai said he was cancelling the event after police sealed off the venue.
Pakistani suicide bomb kills 15
At least 15 people have died in a suicide attack in the city of Quetta in south-western Pakistan, police say.
The explosion tore through a district courts complex as a court was in session, killing a judge, several lawyers and court officials.
No-one has claimed the attack, which injured dozens of people, police said.
‘Now or never’ for climate action
All EU nations must back proposals to cut harmful emissions by 30% by 2020 or risk jeopardising the global effort to curb climate change, warn ministers.
The call for unity among the 27-nation bloc was made by the UK Environment Secretary, David Miliband, and his Spanish and Slovenian counterparts.
Failure to act would threaten efforts to get nations such as the US and China to agree to cap emissions, they said.

NEW DELHI (AP) – A train traveling to Pakistan caught fire early Monday in northern India, killing at least 53 people, and an explosive device was found near the tracks, a railroad official said.
