sauntered vs strolled

WordWeb sez:
strolled – Walk leisurely and with no apparent aim
sauntered – Walk leisurely and with no apparent aim

American Heritage (via Bartleby’s) sez:
Inflected forms: saun·tered, saun·ter·ing, saun·ters
Verb: To walk at a leisurely pace; stroll.
Noun: 1. A leisurely pace. 2. A leisurely walk or stroll.
Etymology: Probably from Middle English santren, to muse

Think I’ll flip a coin and go for strolled. Sauntered sounds kinda snobbish or gang like, doesn’t it?

bookmark_borderSome Alone Time

Lorna headed up Nawth today and will return next week. After nearly 15yrs, it’s hard for us to be so far apart. Last year when I was up for a month, it was difficult for us both.

The dogs are already wary. When Lorna is gone, their schedule is shot all to hell. They eat two meals a day, still about 12 hrs apart, but the times will radically change. They keep staring at me, wondering just what will happen this time. At least it is relatively warm and I can keep the back door open. That way I can feed them when I go to bed at 3am and not wake up to a mess 8hrs later.

I hope to get some major editing/writing done while she is gone. Won’t happen I bet, but I can hope. Right? Right??

Joella saw the luggage out this morning and was like, hey, are we going somewhere AGAIN?? I think when she realized it was Lorna who was leaving, she didn’t know if she were going too or what. Some day I hope to learn dog-speak.

Dang, there’s that word ‘hope’ again.

bookmark_borderThe Weather

As a ham radio operator (KG4VPY), I know how important weather information is in any emergency. Keeping the lines of communication open, the ones everyone knows about, is the best way to assist people in a panic.

A bill is currently somewhere in the Senate that will damage those communication lines that involve how the National Weather Service (NWS) can dispense its data. There are a lot of ‘conspiracy’ comments flying about on the ‘net lately about this bill.

WeatherUnderground, or Wunderground as it is also known, has issued a statement (to be more accurate, it is more of an official blog entry) about their opinion on this subject. They also provide the wording of the bill on their site.

I finally found information on the bill (S 786) at the Senate website. (and just in case you ever need it, there is a House of Reps website too.)

Anyway, read the bill, see if you can make sense of it, and if you do, be sure to write to your state senator and give them your opinion.

bookmark_borderAbout to Start

Here I go. I am opening a document and placing my hands upon the keyboard.

Between me and it flows energy, a power so strong that it has been sung of in songs, written in verse and ended wars. Not my own act, no, but the similar acts of others before me.

I ready my sword. I prepare my steed. I gird my loins…

Okay, I boot-up the laptop, swing the table closer, and loosen the strings on my sweatpants.

Now, smile!

bookmark_borderGas Prices

Lorna is about to travel up Nawth so I am doing some online research for places for her to stop.

I began by looking up the big name truck stops, such as TA Travel Centers, Loves, FlyingJ, etc. All of them (except TA!) have a method of finding out the price of gas for each of their centers. I found a decent list of all truck stops at the EveryTruckJob.com site. Even if you don’t plan on stopping at one of them, they are a good resource for guestimating your travel costs.

FlyingJ gasoline prices
Loves gasoline prices are accessed via their main page from a drop down menu by state.

The number one thing to remember if you choose to stop at one of these places (ie a truck stop), is that you are a little fly hanging out with the bee hive. Truck stops are named such because they are, well, a place for the big trucks to stop. Some of them are geared almost exclusively to these customers. Yes, you can find gasoline pumps there, sometimes a lot of them. But the diesel pumps are what pays their bills so the merchandise inside is geared toward them. The food is guarenteed to be good and you can be entertained by wandering the aisles, looking at all sorts of 12v gear.

Truck stops are rarely the greasy spoons they used to be, especially those out on the major highway. More of them are WiFi hotspots and even have computers to access (altho usually they are reserved for those who buy 50 gallons or more of diesel).

bookmark_borderPope Psychobabble

The other day he pissed me off. Today he gave me reason to snort: Pope Appeals for Christian Unity.

Grant that we may be one flock and one shepherd. Do not allow your net to be torn, help us to be servants of unity
Pope Benedict XVI

Oh, sure, the Christians are gonna unify. We’ll unify just as soon as we all start being Christians to begin with and stop being Paulians.

I did get a giggle though when I read one of the headlines for a related story: Benedict XVI Installed as Pope. Does that mean his platform is Windoze or is he a Mac man? Under the start menu, where would he go? Under Accessories or Games? Would the icon be a ring or the papal hat?

(note: this is meant as no disrespect to those of the Catholic faith. This is more of a disrespect toward religion and its oxymorons and irony.)

bookmark_borderBlank Page

I started writing today. Not on anything I have already done or thought of or whatever. I just opened up a blank page and started typing. I think I stopped at about the fourth page or so, 1840 words. Not too bad.

But a year ago, last March, my total word count was 145,771. Currently my year count is just 109,066. So, like, can you see my frustration? True, a writer is not defined by his/her word count. But I am a visual person, I view that number as proof I did something. I don’t go to work each day and bring home a paycheck every other week. I don’t get to stamp ‘done’ on a form and file it away. My word count was/is my physical evidence. Editing, while just as much work (maybe more so!) as writing, does not result in any noticeable format that I can view and say ‘there!’. And editing is a bitch for word count junkies.

Fighting the Machine

My hands shook as they moved toward the box and its tray. The last time I faced it, I came out not only the loser, but disgraced and disillusioned as well. I settled down in front of it, and waited.

“One must practice patience, grasshopper.” The things that goes through my head… “It wasn’t God who made honkee-tonk ane-gels, as you wrote in the werds of yer song…”

Finally, recognizable text covers the box and I feel a slight breeze of comfort, almost as if I knew what I was doing. My confidence grew. I tried to restrain it but prairie fires cannot be stopped. The fire consumes all in its path, just as my confidence pushed all the alarms into silence.

Clickety clack, clickety clack. Click. Click. Then a firm Click, and it was over. I waited for the Machine to accept my petition, to process it and allow me to continue beyond this point.

But no, again I face the fatal error box, taunting me with its kabbalistic cyber-speak.

Maybe I haven’t offered it enough. Maybe it wants more memory or speed or power. Maybe it just wants. I feed it RAM and DRAM and DDR. I gave it heat sinks and cooling fins. I even got a green alien head sticker for the front. I all but worship the altar I have made.

As I sit and stare at the screen, I begin to recite my curses toward its creator, toward its future as a boat anchor. “Curse you Bill Gates! Lorna, go start the truck. We’re goin’ fishin’.”

Not the emotion! The movie!!

And check out these sites for official information!

Serenity: The Official Movie Website

FireFlyFans.net

There was a televised series back in 2002 called Firefly, written by Joss Whedon (same guy repsonsible for Buffy and Angel and several others). Anyway, the network didn’t give it a chance and cut it. Really ticked off a whole bunch of folk. Appearantly, their loyalty paid off because, after sales of the DVD of the episodes skyrocketed, ‘they’ realized their errors.

The movie is named Serenity, after the ship. Firefly was the class of the ship, in case you were wondering. The show was funny, had real acting, a fantastic set of actors and of course wonderful writing. But the network did it wrong. The movie is due out this September and I can hardly wait!
